Highland Renaissance

Celebrating beauty, history and community in the Town of Highland, New York. Highland Renaissance (HR) is an all-volunteer community organization dedicated to enhancing the natural beauty and historic character of the community. Our award-winning projects include the belfry restoration at Town Hall in Eldred; pocket parks and flower beds in Eldred, Yulan and Barryville; public tennis court renovation at Eldred Central School; renovation of the vintage filling station in Barryville as a visitor information center; the Barryville History Walk and brochure; the Eagle Observation shelter and interpretive signage in Minisink Ford; annual holiday decorations in Eldred and Barryville; and a comprehensive "Main Street" development and landscaping project for Barryville.

We welcome your participation at any level. New friends and new ideas are always welcome!

A high energy, fun, social group for those individuals who are 55+. The group is always excepting new members to join. Activities include aerobics, shuffleboard, cards and monthly covered dish gatherings. Several times a year fundraising parties are held in which the community is invited. The group holds many outings a year ranging from trips to the movies, regional day trips and longer 2-5 day trips in which others are welcome to join. The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men’s fraternal benefit society that was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.

Mission Statement: To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs. The Lions motto is “We Serve.” Throughout the year the Lion’s Club hold meetings with guest speakers and plans several community events; golf outing as well as Easter and Christmas events. The Lion’s Club work with the several health related causes; diabetes awareness, sight and hearing conservation and work. For the youth in the community they provide scholarships and sponsor the playground.

Volunteers from 8 to 80 are always needed at Sunshine Hall Free Library in Eldred. Their help is gratefully acknowledged and truly appreciated. Many of the services and programs offered would not be possible without the support of volunteers. Visit the library for more information or to fill out an application.

The Friends of Sunshine Hall Free Library is an organization interested in books and libraries. They meet once a month, and their mission is to focus public attention on library services, facilities and needs.

Activities include: cultural programs, annual 2-day book sale, purchase of needed items for the library, annual luncheon, and more. New members are always welcome.

American Legion Ambulance Service is an all volunteer Advanced Life Support Corps serving the Town of Highland in Sullivan County, New York. We provide mutual aid assistance to the Town of Lumberland and Shohola and Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania.

We are an authorized community training center for American Heart Association and American Safety and Health Institute. We offer courses in CPR, First Aid, Public Access Defibrillation, Oxygen Administration and Blood-borne Pathogens.

The fire department’s ladies’ auxiliary is an active organization who supports the Highland Lake Fire Department by bringing food and water to the scene of an on-going emergency and through donations to the fire department to buy much needed equipment and support to their dive team. Annual fund raisers: February Pasta Night, July 4th Raffle and the Fall Soup Sale. Meetings are every 3rd Wednesday of the month at the firehouse.
